Counselor (Communities in Schools)
Mariel Aken is a native of New Orleans and attended public school in New Orleans from kindergarten through 12th grade. Mariel then completed her undergraduate degree in Psychology at the University of Colorado-Boulder. Following this, she completed a master’s degree in counseling at Loyola University of New Orleans. Mariel has worked in mental health clinics and public schools in both Orleans and St. Bernard Parish. For the past five years, Mariel was the founding counselor and director of the Response to Intervention program at a local charter elementary school. Mariel now works for Communities in Schools, a national organization that places counselors and social workers in schools to assess student needs and provide resources to help them succeed in the classroom and in life. Mariel will be a part of the Cypress Academy team for the entire school year. Mariel’s dream is that all schools will have the training and the resources to support each individual student’s academic and social emotional needs. Mariel believes that all students can and will learn with teaching. Mariel lives in the uptown area with her husband, daughter, and dog. Ms. Aken joined the Cypress faculty in July of 2016.
